Here are just a few things we can finally put to rest. No, the Knicks will not be making a run at Tyson Chandler through free agency. The same goes for DeAndre Jordan, Nene, Marc Gasol or anyone else you want to name that will want more than five million dollars a year or is a Restricted Free Agent. The Knicks are around two million dollars over the salary cap. The only thing that we have to offer will be the veteran’s minimum and the mid-level exception.
The focus will be on names such as Kwame Brown, Kurt Thomas, Jeff Foster, and gulp, Sebastian Telfair etc. Yes, gulp, because I want absolutely no part of Telfair, but he’s on that level. If you pay attention to me on radio call-ins or twitter (@ralphguerrero), you know that I’m all for going after Jeff Foster. He brings everything the Knicks lack, toughness, rebounding and the biggest need, on ball defense. I have been talking about it for weeks now.
The Knicks have a bunch of guys who are very good weak side defenders (Stat, Turiaf), but can not guard a talented post player one-on-one. Knicks fans will love Foster for his grit and take-no-trash attitude. He fits this team perfectly on so many levels. If he is signed he immediately becomes their best center and best defensive player and rebounder. The only question is what we are willing to pay, and what he is willing to accept.
I only see us signing him to a multi-year deal if the Knicks are certain they can get Paul via trade. There is no chance they sacrifice cap space for him. We have to hope that the Knicks have a plan that they are absolutely sure of. Who knows, maybe the last guy they got from Indiana still has some pull? If so, I’m confident things will work out for the best.
